Our generation has a strange silence, as if everyone has turned down the volume on their hearts. Emotional detachment has become an art, and being “unbothered” has become a skill. As if numbness is something to strive for, people share statements about not caring, not needing anyone, and not feeling anything. In the process, we’ve persuaded ourselves that vulnerability is too costly and tenderness is dangerous. We swallow our emotions in quiet and act as though nothing is wrong because the world continues telling us that being detached protects us.
However, the majority of people are actually emotionally worn out rather than genuinely apathetic. Life has been difficult. The world has not always been predictable. Friendships seem fleeting, relationships seem risky, and stability seems uncommon. Therefore, overwhelm rather than a lack of emotion is the reason why individuals turn off. Being casual turns into a shield. Hyper-independence develops into a habit. And while everyone seems to be beyond caring, they all really want for warmth, intimacy, and understanding. This yearning to be hugged without being ridiculed is a subtle type of pain.
Nowadays, it’s considered excessive to feel deeply. It is considered “embarrassing” to show excitement. Saying you’re hurt is seen as weakness. As a result, we find ourselves in relationships where both parties pretend to be unconcerned as we wait to see who violates their morals. Because nobody wants to be the one who puts in more effort, we ultimately lose out on excellent things. Ironically, we are scared to appear as though we want closeness even while we are starving for it.
But emotion is not a weakness. Having a heart that responds to the outside environment is not a sign of weakness. Being moved, optimistic, open, and impacted requires bravery. In a culture that is fixated on appearing as though nothing mattered, it takes courage to display your humanity. You are free to feel enthusiastic. You have the right to desire a connection. Saying, “This hurt me,” without offering an apology, is acceptable. In a time when everyone is acting as though they are made of stone, caring is a lovely revolt, not something to be ashamed of.
Perhaps allowing oneself to feel again is the true strength. When the world encourages harshness, choose tenderness. When you bring your entire heart into places that no longer know how to contain it. Emotion is evidence that you are alive, present, and still able to love; it is not an annoyance. And really? Those who refuse to become numb will own the future. It is the property of those who have the courage to feel.
